"The Forrester's Arms", a community pub, is within walking distance and serves very good food.

The location is ideal for walking either from the door, or in neighbouring Wharfedale and Wensleydale, nearby Malham and Swaledale, as well as touring the Yorkshire Dales National Park with its splendid natural scenery, picturesque villages and market towns, castles and abbeys - all of which are close by. Leyburn, a pleasant market town 4 miles away (market day is Friday), has pubs, restaurants, supermarket, petrol garage etc.

Redgate Farm is a thatched, 17th century, Grade II listed former farmhouse in the peaceful village of Shute. The property has a beautiful south-facing garden and fine unspoilt views over the surrounding farmland.

Shute is a charming village located between Honiton (seven miles) and Axminster (four miles) with the National Trust property of Shute Barton at its centre, and Redgate Farm was originally part of the Shute Estate.

There are many local walks in the surrounding countryside. There are two local pubs a five minute drive away in Kilmington serving good food, and the nearest shops are at Colyton a six minute drive.

Bellhouse details

Bellhouse is a characterful, spacious rambling house with comfortable accommodation. It is in a glorious, quiet and very secluded setting with plenty of opportunities for long walks. The boundaries of the garden and woodland abut Woodchester Park, owned by the National Trust, and from the house it is possible to walk for miles without crossing a road,hearing a car or seeing more than a handful of people. Wildlife abounds around the five ornamental lakes which run through the Park. The Cotswold Way passes nearby.

The house itself forms the south-west wing of Woodchester Park House, a Grade II listed building. It dates back to the 1860s and retains many original features. Bellhouse's garden is attractive and private. A courtyard and a further patio area provide sun traps for outdoor sitting and eating. A large lawn surrounded by mature shrubs and trees is good for children's games. (Parents beware two ponds are separated off by a low fence). The garden is also enjoyed by foxes and badgers. The badgers are often spotted at dusk when they come for peanuts.

The Rose and Crown in Nympsfield is a 20-minute walk. Nailsworth, just three miles away, has a deli to die forand the best ever local bakery and coffee shop.

Cheltenham, Bath and Cirencester are all within 30 minutes' drive. The Gatcombe and Badminton Horse Trials are each within 20 minutes. For gardeners, Westonbirt Arboretum, Rodmarton Manor and Abbey House Gardens, Malmesbury are close. For music lovers, the annual Tetbury Music Festival is 15 minutes away. Slimbridge Wetland Centre, Berkeley Castle, Cattle Country, the Cotswold Water Park and the Bristol Gliding club are also within half an hour's drive.

Accommodation overview: Waitby School was built on Waitby Fell in 1680 by James Highmore, a local to the area, for the children of Waitby and Smardale. About a mile and a half west of Kirkby Stephen, Waitby is said to have been an ancient market town, with a castle, chapel and cemetery, but no trace of either is now to be seen. However, the school remains, standing proud on the fellside and, having been purchased recently by another local family, has been lovingly restored, in conjunction with English Heritage, to offer luxurious holiday accommodation. The property stands alone and enjoys uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside, dotted with livestock and the occasional farmer and tractor at doin up time.
