The Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne (15 miles), with an indoor swimming-pool, adventure park and new Sovereign Harbour complex, still retains a sense of its opulent past. Royal Tunbridge Wells and the famous Pantiles are 18 miles away. Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling, is 5 miles away at Burwash. There are also numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites in the locality.
Activities offered locally include trout fishing (fly only) in Ashburnham, Bewl and Darwell reservoirs. Horse riding, four golf courses plus fantastic cycling and walking. There are many festivals and shows throughout the year, including orchestral nights at Battle Abbey and the castles of Bodium and Hertsmonceaux.
