Accommodation overview: The Old Smiddy is a detached stone cottage situated in the charming village of Spean Bridge.  Originally the village blacksmiths cottage and forge, it dates back over 250 years.  It has now been painstakingly restored and refurbished, blending historical and modern architecture and design to create a cottage of great charm and character with modern luxury.  It holds a Visit Scotland 4 star grading.  Downstairs the cottage retains its lovely old slate flooring, oak beams and large fireplace.  The accommodation is open-plan, with a modern kitchen, a dining area with large solid wood table, and a deep leather suite set around the large fireplace in the lounge area.  A beautifully presented double bedroom downstairs benefits from large picture windows overlooking the private patio area with the river beyond.  A wrought iron spiral staircase leads up the open plan first floor, with four single beds.  The property is situated next to Smiddy House and Russells, a Restaurant with rooms run by the owner of the cottage.  This 2 AA rosette restaurant has a reputation for superb food using fresh local produce, and visitors are welcome to dine there in the evening as well as enjoy the superb Scottish breakfasts, if they would like a change from self-catering!

Accommodation overview: Burnside Cottage is situated on a south facing hillside above the small Highland village of Bonar Bridge in Sutherland. It enjoys lovely views across the Kyle of Sutherland to the hills and mountains beyond. The cottage was originally built in the 19th century, adjoining earlier croft buildings and has since been sympathetically extended and recently upgraded to provide bright and spacious accommodation throughout. The cottage is surrounded by its own large, mature garden grounds, which are a real feature of the property. Lawned areas are interspersed with pretty shrubs, mature trees and attractive old stone patios. A conservatory along the length of the cottage provided an excellent viewing point over the gardens and surrounding hills and valleys. With an open plan kitchen/ breakfast/ living room, separate formal dining room and cosy lounge with lovely open fireplace, all with superb views, it offers very generous accommodation in a beautiful setting. The cottage is situated in a quiet country location yet it is just a short (1/2 mile) walk to the centre of Bonar Bridge.

Visitors are welcome to roam the grounds including the fabulous Italian-style terraced gardens which command panoramic views over the lake to the distant Cheviot Hills. The many scenic and historic attractions of the Border country are all close at hand and the lovely beaches of Berwick and Holy Island are also easily accessible. Kelso (6 miles) offers a good choice of shops inns and restaurant and is also the home of Floors Castle and the famous Kelso Horse Races whilst Edinburgh with its magnificent castle museums galleries and excellent shopping is only a 35 mile drive. Fly fishing can be arranged locally and several golf course are found nearby. There are tea rooms in the courtyard and shops and pubs are just 3½ miles away.
