Accommodation overview: Hawkswood House details
Set in the picturesque hamlet of Peat Inn, just a few miles from St Andrews, this superb detached property combines the charm of the original farm buildings with modern style and sophistication and impeccable standards of service. St Andrews is best known as the home of golf but this delightful historic town also offers excellent shopping, art galleries, botanic gardens and museums, and magnificent golden beaches. It also has far more restaurants and cafes than you would expect for a town of its size, ranging from fine dining to cosy coffee shops and ice cream parlours. The renowned restaurant at Peat Inn is within walking distance, and St Andrews offers welcoming pubs and a wide choice of both fine and casual dining.
In its heyday St Andrews Cathedral was a centre of pilgrimage and the largest church in Scotland. The museum has an excellent collection of sculptures including a superbly carved Pictish sarcophagus, and your ticket includes the chance to enjoy the incredible views from the top of St Rule's Tower. You can also visit the British Golf Museum, which is handily situated not far from 18th green of the Old Course.
For something a little different, the East Neuk is a string of fishing villages for which the word picturesque might have been invented.
Other recommended day trips include Falkland Palace, former hunting lodge of the Stuart monarchs; the Secret Bunker intended to shelter officials during a nuclear war; and the Scottish Fisheries Museum at Anstruther.
And when only the buzz of a big city will do, Edinburgh, Dundee and Glasgow are all easily reached by car.
For keen golfers, this is the ultimate private lodge, with easy access to dozens of fine courses. But whilst golf is bound to be the main attraction, Hawkswood House has plenty to offer for romantic breaks, longer holidays, and groups of friends looking for a relaxing country escape.
