Accommodation overview: Modsary Cottage is set amongst the remote and beautiful landscape of Sutherland on the far North West coast of Scotland. Whilst easily accessible by good roads it offers total seclusion in a stunning setting and provides a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Built of stone and formerly a croft farmhouse Modsary Cottage has been lovingly restored by its owners to provide bright and attractive accommodation, with a lovely modern kitchen and bathroom, whilst retaining many of its original features, including wood panelling and open fireplace in the lounge and a wood burning stove in the cosy dining room. Set in five acres of farmland the immediate gardens surrounding the property have a real cottage garden feel, with brightly coloured flowers and a large grassed area with small patio and bench seats. The area is renowned for its miles of sweeping white sandy beaches which are usually quiet, whatever the time of year. Less than a mile away is the beautiful and secluded Lamigo Bay, which appears almost undiscovered and untouched by time. Nearby Torrisdale Bay boasts an amazing beach with soft white sand dunes set against the white waves and turquoise sea of the Atlantic. The area is a paradise for surfers, body boarders and beach lovers generally. The pretty village of Bettyhill, above Torrisdale Bay, has good local facilities including pubs, restaurants, as well as an excellent indoor swimming pool and leisure centre. There is also a  museum documenting the fascinating history of the Highland clearances and by following the Strathnaver Trail visitors can experience life in the Highlands from Neolithic times through the Viking era to the modern day. The area is also a wild life watchers paradise. Whales, basking sharks, porpoises, seals and otters are all seen in the area. At Melvich just along the coast there is also a colony of puffins which can be seen and at Forsinard, Strath Halladale; there is an RSPB nature reserve, where local rangers will take visitors to explore the bird life, flora and fauna close to hand. The headland at Strathy Point just along the coast from the cottage is fringed with spectacular cliffs with Strathy lighthouse dominating the skyline. Nearby Borgie forest has a number of superb woodland trails, ideal for walking or cycling. Heading south is the Strath of Kildonan, site of a 19th century gold rush where it is still possible to pan for gold in the River Helmsdale - some visitors even claim to have paid for their holiday by selling the gold - but you must stake your claim by posting the date and amount of gold found in the old stone letter box! Fishing is a popular pastime and visitors are welcome to fish for trout in a pretty loch just yards from the cottage door, and day tickets can be obtained locally to fish for salmon on the famous river Naver. Sea fishing is available from Skerray harbour, under a mile away, and there is also a boat trip available on request. Golf, canoeing, cycling, hill walking, climbing and horse riding are all available locally (visitors are welcome to bring their own horse to experience a ride on the wide expanses of open sands - to be arranged in advance via the owner). There are a number of excellent local restaurants, pubs and cafes in the small towns and villages along the coast. Modsary Cottage provides an ideal base for exploring this spell binding and unforgettable region of the UK.
