Accommodation overview: In a magnificent rural setting, with fabulous views of the Skiddaw mountain range, magnificent sunsets over the Solway Firth, and the hills of Galloway across the border, these comfortable holiday properties enjoy shared use of a large and colourful garden and were winners of the Keswick Tourism Association Country Establishments in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and the Cumbria in Bloom Tourist Board Rose Bowl for Self Catering Establishment winners in 2004, 2005 and 2006. Rose Cottage is attached to the owner’s farmhouse home; Rambling Rose Cottage and Rosedale Cottage are adjacent and have both been converted to a high standard, whilst Primrose Cottage has been converted from a former byre and stands in a courtyard which is bedecked with flower tubs, window boxes and hanging baskets. The cottages are beautifully furnished and equipped to VisitBritain ‘4 Star Gold’ standard. Guests will enjoy the friendly rare breeds sheep, pot bellied pigs, goats, and ponies (including a miniature shetland pony called Mirabelle) and visitors are welcome to walk in the fields surrounding the farm (a red squirrel has been spotted in the grounds), as well as the many public footpaths nearby. This 500-acre farm is set in an AONB, with walks from the door plus superb fell walking nearby. Keswick stands on the shores of Derwent Water and is an excellent base to explore delightful Borrowdale. In the town itself are many interesting shops, inns and restaurants, an entertaining motor museum, as well as a leisure pool. Cockermouth also has a swimming pool. Just 6 miles away Bassenthwaite Lake offers a variety of watersports. Within easy reach are the beautiful lakes of Derwent Water, Crummock Water and Buttermere, surrounded by Lakeland’s dramatic scenery. There is tennis, riding and golf in the area, as well as good fishing locally and excellent bird watching from the farm, as well as the chance to spot the occasional red squirrel and deer, whilst it is a short drive to Osprey Watch at Dodd Wood, Bassenthwaite. Shop 4 miles. There is a good choice of pubs and restaurants locally (including vegetarian), the nearest pub in Ireby is a 1½-mile drive away. Uldale is 2 miles, also with a pub serving good food.

The old market town of Macclesfield with its shops and cafes are well worth a visit or walk the canal tow path to the lovely village of Bollington. The property is near to The Peak District, spend the day at Chatsworth House and Estate or the spa town of Buxton, with its theatre and beautiful gardens. Antique fairs and French market can often be found here. Take a trip to Castleton caves famous for its Blue John stone or take in the museums, art galleries, restaurants and shops that Manchester city has to offer. Shop and pub 21/2 miles.

Brackens (LJ5) is a detached cottage on one level looking out onto the pretty grounds and brook, with spacious living/dining room. Coopers (LJ6) is on the upper level of the original mill with level access from the rear, and Turners (LJ7) is the lower level of the mill with access from the front. Both these cottages have wonderful views along the Duddon Valley from their living rooms. Original beams, traditional furniture and lovely views characterise each cottage, whilst the peaceful lawned grounds with picnic bench overlooking the babbling brook (Hole House Gill) and 7 acres of natural woodland stretching up the hill, are there for guests’ enjoyment. Each cottage has its own sitting out area with garden furniture. The whole area is a walker’s paradise, close to Eskdale and the Langdale Fells which are accessed via the stunning Hard Knott Pass, as well as Wasdale with amazing views of Wast Water. History is an important part of this beautiful western Lake District area and Muncaster Castle is a short drive away, a superb day out for all the family. The steam train can be boarded at Ravenglass and a trip along Eskdale is not to be missed. A scenic drive to Duddon Bridge leads to the pretty small market town of Broughton-in-Furness which has very good pubs and eating places, as well as shops. Just a few miles further is the South Lakes Wild Animal Park at Dalton, whilst three miles of clean award-winning sandy beaches stretch from Haverigg northwards along the coastline.
